U.S. Imposes 160% Total Tariff on Chinese Graphite, Disrupting EV Battery Supply Chain
The TRUMP administration has imposed a 93.5% anti-dumping duty on Chinese graphite, compounding earlier tariffs to bring total import costs to 160%. The move follows a December petition by U.S. graphite producers alleging market dumping. China supplied two-thirds of the 180,000 metric tons of graphite imported by the U.S. last year—a critical component for electric vehicle battery anodes.
Automakers face immediate cost pressures as the tariff adds $7 per kilowatt-hour to battery production. CRU Group estimates this erases 20% of the Inflation Reduction Act's tax credit value, potentially wiping out multiple quarters of profits for Korean battery manufacturers. The Commerce Department will issue its final determination by December 5.
